She had a sister, named Mary, who sat at the Lord&#8217;s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, &#8220;Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to help me.&#8221;But the Lord answered her, &#8220;Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. But before she does &#8211; try to think your way into this story a little. Why do you suppose their brother Lazarus isn&#8217;t mentioned? If Jesus and his disciples were in town, do you imagine then also in the room? If so &#8211; why is Mary there where she doesn&#8217;t strictly belong? If not &#8211; why is Mary alone with Jesus &#8211; which is also inappropriate? What do we hear in the word, &#8220;distracted?&#8221; Do you imagine Martha as the &#8220;bad&#8221; one? What keep us &#8220;distracted&#8221; form the &#8220;better part?&#8221; And what IS the better part anyway?
