St Alban’s Episcopal Church Bolivar, Missouri Saturday, May 7, 2022Before SundayEaster 4 The Other Reading Acts 9:36-43(This is the story of a holy woman – and there are many; there always are…) Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, “Please come to us without delay.” So Peter got up and went with them. And when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, “Tabitha, get up.” Then she opened her eyes and seeing Peter, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive. This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. Meanwhile, he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner. Happy birthday to Becca Cox She does a great deal at St Alban’s that you never even know about, and nearly always cheerfully. Today she talked to the people from Polk County glass about the large windows on the north side of the building that need replacing – and learned some disturbing information about the “stucco” that actually isn’t. And she talked with several roofing companies about the skylights on the porch – and to the Church Insurance Company about the hail damage to the metal roof. And she bought a new garbage disposal for the kitchen which she will replace this week. I am grateful for her; I am also simply grateful to be her mom. Announcements before Sunday Mother’s Day Tomorrow is the feast day of the medieval saint, Julian of Norwich, so a Mother’s Day sermon would be appropriate – especially if we used her tender understanding of Jesus as Mother! Or if we decided to talk about the art of “mothering”, which is not gender-specific anyway, and not dependent on having children. But we aren’t. So enjoy the day with your children if you are a mother, or with your mom if you have one nearby whom you love. But this is not a comfortable holiday for many people whose relationships with their mothers were difficult, abusive or simply complicated. It isn’t easy for those who have longed to be mothers, and aren’t, or for those who have lost their children. Just be kind. The Adult Class led by Ryan Williams will meet at 9:30. We will be discussing Chapter 3. Everyone is welcome, but please do try to read the material before you comment! Bishop’s Committee We need to have a meeting of the bishop’s committee as soon as possible. I know tomorrow is too soon, and with the possibility of several away for the holiday, we will wait – but by next week we really do need to gather for a few minutes after church – MAY 15! We need to agree about what to do regarding the broken skylights on the back porch and on the shed outside caused by the hail. We need to give approval to replace the leaking windows on the north side of the sanctuary. We need to decide what to do about the metal roof damage, if anything, in the absence of leaks. We need to think about how to conserve electricity in the summer when we have to use air conditioning. Our electric bill which has been manageable is going to soar in hot weather, with the change in electric company, no matter what we do. Easter Egg Hunt We will not do it tomorrow, although the sun was out today. The grass is still wet and the ground is soggy, But there is no rain forecast for this week, so by NEXT Sunday we should be fine to go ahead. The eggs have been filled for weeks and waiting in the office for just such a time as that! Don’t tell the kids. It will be a huge surprise since they’ve mostly forgotten about it! |
