St Alban’s Episcopal Church Bolivar, Missouri Friday, July 15, 2022 Mary and Martha the gospel for Sunday Mary and Martha Luke 10:38-42 As Jesus and his disciples went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into their home. She had a sister, named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to help me.”But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken from her.” Reflection before Sunday Ruth Lewis will be preaching. But before she does – try to think your way into this story a little. Why do you suppose their brother Lazarus isn’t mentioned? If Jesus and his disciples were in town, do you imagine then also in the room? If so – why is Mary there where she doesn’t strictly belong? If not – why is Mary alone with Jesus – which is also inappropriate? What do we hear in the word, “distracted?” Do you imagine Martha as the “bad” one? What keep us “distracted” form the “better part?” And what IS the better part anyway? What is the core of hospitality?Enjoy! |
